Sargent hoped to enhance his reputation by painting and exhibiting her portrait. Working without a commission but with his sitter’s complicity, he emphasized her daring personal style, showing the right strap of her gown slipping from her shoulder. At the Salon of 1884, the portrait received more ridicule than praise. Sargent repainted the shoulder strap and kept the work for over thirty years. When, eventually, he sold it to the Metropolitan, he commented, “I suppose it is the best thing I have done,” but asked that the Museum disguise the sitter’s name." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0827/5738/6483/files/JohnSingerSargent-MadameX_VirginieAmelieAvegnoGautreau_-product_35726cd6-f6e7-4b7e-b1e6-cf2a80d5b69b.jpg?v=1781483025
diana
Diana

Artist: Narcisse-Virgile Diaz de la Peña (French, 1808–1876)

Original Dimensions: 46 1/2" x 27 3/4"

Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

About Artwork: (1849) "Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, is famously chaste and modest, but Diaz de la Peña depicts her half-nude, with a retinue of beautiful women and a young arrow-bearer who resembles Cupid, the god of love. Once he had puzzled-out his conception, he continued to fine-tune the poses and positions of the card players, until they—like the four pipes hanging on the wall behind them—each fell perfectly into place. This canvas, shown with great success at the Salon of 1785, has been interpreted as a means of advocating their cause.
