The subject is taken from Ovid’s \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eMetamorphoses\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e and depicts the sorceress Medea in the foreground, casting spells to rejuvenate the body of her husband’s father, Aeson. Two altars burn with sacrifices, including a black sheep.
