Sophia Galloway was the daughter of William and Margaret Richardson, prominent Quakers of West River, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. She married Richard Galloway in 1715 and they lived in the Galloway's ancestral home, Cedar Park, where their daughter, Elizabeth, was born in 1721. The composition is very close to several portraits by Robert Feke, who derived the pose from a 1735 British print.
