About Artwork: (ca. 1860–65) "Amory Sibley Carhart (1851–1912) was born in Brooklyn. He was the son of Mary E. Rose and George Beavers Carhart, a founder of the New York Cotton Exchange and president of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. Educated in this country and in Europe, Armory Carhart developed an early interest in art as indicated by the sketchbook and pencil he holds in this portrait. He eventually became a serious art collector as he went on to direct the Union Trust Company of New York and the Peoples Trust Company of Brooklyn. This portrait was painted before the autumn of 1864 when first exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association. The subject's apparent age suggests execution during the early 1860s. Carhart's daughter donated the picture and a portrait of the sitter's son and namesake (64.220.4) to the Museum." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
