About Artwork: (1918) "The only major American Impressionist to depict the home front during World War I, Hassam produced a series of canvases between 1916 and 1919 representing Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue and adjacent streets decorated for Liberty loan drives. These patriotic displays, in which stretches of the avenue were draped with flags and banners, were organized by the government to promote the sale of savings bonds.
