Artist: Bartolomeo Cavarozzi & Master of the Acquavella Still Life (Italian, Bartolomeo Cavarozzi: 1587–1625)
Original Dimensions: 19 1/2" x 26 3/4"
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
About Artwork: (ca. 1620) "Caravaggio’s powerful still lifes from about 1600 probably inspired Cavarozzi to imagine such a bold composition against a monochrome background. Cavarozzi’s principal patron, Giovanni Battista Crescenzi, led an academy near the Pantheon that advocated the direct study of nature, evident here in, for example, the raking light on the grape leaves’ veins and insect bites on the large quince at center." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
