The sumptuous wildflower garden cultivated by Hassam’s friend Celia Thaxter, a poet and amateur artist, provided an enticing contrast to the island’s rugged terrain, attracting many landscape painters. In this work, vibrant red poppies entangled in lush green foliage introduce a view of sun-bleached Babb’s Rock.
