About Artwork: (mid-1550s) "Filippo Archinto was a powerful Catholic cleric from Milan who participated in the Council of Trent and zealously fought against heresy. Book in hand and brow knitted, he makes a determined and intelligent figure. Titian renders the textures of his white gown and deep red mozzetta, or cape, with lively brushstrokes; their effortless appearance conceals the labor involved in the painter’s carefully crafted style. Titian portrayed Archinto when the latter occupied the diplomatic role of papal nuncio in Venice. Archinto was later confirmed as Archbishop of Milan, but local church authorities who feared his penchant for reform conspired to keep him out of the city, and he died in exile." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
