About Artwork: (ca. 1896) "Here, Chase’s wife, Alice, is shown in the entry hall of their summer home at Shinnecock, on Long Island, New York. Around 1896 Alice gave birth to the couple’s sixth child in eight years and their first son. Chase depicted her engaged in a genteel handicraft with a maternal subtext, sewing for the "little one." Throughout the domestic scene, the artist paid careful attention to rendering various decorative elements, including his earlier portrait of Alice, hanging in the window.
