About Artwork: (early 1730s) "Painted just after Boucher’s return to Paris after several years in Italy, this early work continues the tradition of the capriccio, a fanciful depiction pioneered by artists such as Benedetto Castiglione and often inspired by the rustic countryside surrounding Rome. This view is taken from the Campo Vaccino, named for the cows that grazed there; on the Palatine Hill, Boucher has depicted the palace of Caligula and Tiberius and the ruined sixteenth-century gardens of the Farnese family. He copied the figures in the foreground directly from drawings by Abraham Bloemaert, familiar to him through a teacher in Rome, which Boucher also etched and published in 1735." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
