He was active in politics, banking, railroading, and the New York State militia. This ambitious portrait and the pendant of his wife (31.29.2) were donated by the sitter's granddaughter. Both portraits demonstrate the self-taught artist's adaptation of sophisticated academic formulas. The sitters are shown in theatrical settings with matching backdrop columns.
