About Artwork: (1829) "In his autobiographical sketch, Dunlap told of being commissioned to paint this portrait of John Adams Conant (1800–1886). He was invited by the sitter's brother, Samuel Conant, in July of 1829 to visit the Conant family in Brandon, Vermont in order to paint eight members of the family of his father, John Conant. Dunlap resided with the family from August until October to paint these portraits. The younger John A. Conant was just under thirty at the time of Dunlap's visit to his father’s house. Dunlap painted him and his young wife, Caroline D. Holton (13.217.2) during this visit. The sitter was a partner in the family firm, John Conant and Sons, as well as a state legislator and president of the Brandon Bank." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
