About Artwork: (ca. 1837–38) "Before serving as the eighth President of the United States from 1837 to 1841, Martin Van Buren (1782–1862) was attorney general of New York, United States senator, governor of New York, secretary of state, and Vice-President under Andrew Jackson. Inman painted a number of portraits of Van Buren. The first was the full-length portrait commissioned by the City of New York in 1830 (City Hall, New York). This portrait was one of a number of bust-length copies probably painted during Van Buren's presidency to meet the growing demand for his depiction. The other known versions of the portrait exhibit the hand of an assistant, probably Edward Mooney, one of Inman's pupils, who is known to have painted copies of it." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
