About Artwork: (1897) "The New Yorkers Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes (1867–1944) and Edith Minturn (1867–1937) married in 1895. As a wedding gift, a friend of the couple commissioned a portrait of the young bride from Sargent. The artist initially selected an evening gown for the sitting, but he soon decided to portray Minturn in sporty, modern day-wear with a Great Dane at her side. When the dog was not available, her husband had "a sudden inspiration," and "offered to assume the role of the Great Dane in the picture."
