About Artwork: (ca. 1771–76) "The widow Ann Dymes Dewick (ca. 1710–1776) became the second wife of Benjamin Simons in 1755. Simons was the owner of a large plantation called Middleburg, near Charleston, South Carolina. The couple lived in Charleston, where Simons was in business as a rice merchant and slave trader. His wife was a supporter of St. Philip's Church and was buried there. The work was done after Benbridge's return from Europe, and demonstrates the difficulty many American painters felt in maintaining stylistic improvements learned abroad." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
