Mrs. John Adams Conant
Artist: William Dunlap (American, 1766–1839)
Original Dimensions: 30 1/8" x 25"
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
About Artwork: (1829) "Very little is known of Caroline D. Holton, wife of John Adams Conant (see 13.217.1). She must have died before May 1869, when her husband married for the second time. Dunlap painted her while staying with the Conant family at Brandon, Vermont between August and October, 1829. Dunlap's style, although less successful here than in the companion portrait of her husband, is derived from works by Thomas Sully." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
