About Artwork: (1764) "Once considered a portrait of Mistress Ann Galloway by Gustavus Hesselius, the discovery of an inscription long concealed under an old lining canvas identified the subject as Sophia Galloway (1697–1781) and the artist as John Hesselius. Sophia Galloway was the daughter of William and Margaret Richardson, prominent Quakers of West River, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. She married Richard Galloway in 1715 and they lived in the Galloway's ancestral home, Cedar Park, where their daughter, Elizabeth, was born in 1721. The composition is very close to several portraits by Robert Feke, who derived the pose from a 1735 British print. The canvas seems to have been cut down from an original dimension of about fifty by forty inches." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
