About Artwork: (1890–91) "Sunlight illuminates Bannister’s tranquil scene of a grassy hillside dotted with white, yellow, and red wildflowers overlooking calm coastal waters. After a youth spent working aboard ships, the Canadian-born artist eventually settled in Providence, Rhode Island, and maintained an interest in maritime environments. Known for expressively painted pastoral landscapes inspired by the French Barbizon School, Bannister imbued later views—such as this—with a vibrancy and luminosity informed by Impressionism.
