About Artwork: (1840–50) "Mid-nineteenth century portrait painters, both academic and untrained, often depicted girls picking grapes or other fruits or flowers. The formula was particularly popular with naive artists, with their tendency to revel in attributes and detail. The sitter's pose and setting are similar to those used in another painting of a girl picking berries (ill. in J. Lipman, "American Primitive Painting"), however neither work is signed or dated.
