Portrait of a Man, Possibly Nicolaes Pietersz Duyst van Voorhout (born about 1600, died 1650)
Artist: Frans Hals (Dutch, 1582–1666)
Original Dimensions: 31 3/4" x 26"
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
About Artwork: (ca. 1636–38) "On the basis of an old inscription, the sitter of this portrait has been identified as Nicolaes Pietersz Duyst van Voorhout, a brewer in the Dutch city of Haarlem. Brewing was one of the most lucrative professions in the Dutch Republic, and at the time of his death, Duyst van Voorhout owned forty-seven paintings. The elaborate lace collar allows historians to date the painting to the late 1630s." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
