About Artwork: (ca. 1825) "Like many of Eichholtz's sitters, Samuel Humes (1754–1836) was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. A prosperous middle-class citizen, he was treasurer of the Sun Fire Company from 1798 to 1822 and served as an assistant city burgess in 1803 and 1804. In 1799 he married Mary Hamilton and all of their five children, with their spouses, were painted by Eichholtz. For many years, the sitter was identified as Samuel Humes's son, Dr. Samuel Humes (1788–1852), however the work closely resembles a similar likeness of the elder Humes, also by Eichholtz, dated 1810. The portrait demonstrates the stylistic influences of Gilbert Stuart and Thomas Sully, both of whom provided Eichholtz with early advice and training." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
