About Artwork: (1872) "Painted during the summer of 1872, this striking composition likely depicts a view from Contentment Island, near Darien, Connecticut. Sunset casts the sky in a prism of colors from yellow to orange, pink, and lavender, creating an almost meditative quality. Absent of shoreline, boats, or figures, the sparse vista reveals Kensett’s ability to capture dazzling light and atmospheric effects. This work comes from a group of thirty-eight paintings completed during the final summer of Kensett’s life.
