About Artwork: (1866) "This sweeping vista by Ohio-born Wyant likely depicts the Tennessee River and Cumberland Plateau in southeastern Tennessee. After traveling to the region in the early 1860s, the artist completed this composition while studying in Germany. Painted a year after the Civil War ended and exhibited in New York City upon his 1866 return to the U.S., the work is a rare southern landscape by a northern artist. Wyant’s close observation and precise rendering of nature is joined by subtle coloration and moody atmosphere, elements inspired by the French Barbizon painting he encountered abroad as well as the tonalist works of George Inness." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
