About Artwork: (by 1898) "This was one of eight paintings exhibited by Weir in 1898 at the first exhibition of the "Ten American Painters," held in New York at the Durand-Ruel Galleries. It was evidently painted after 1896 when the type of dress illustrated was in style. The model was the sister of the actor Henry Dixey. Weir painted her again in 1898 in "The Gray Bodice" (The Art Institute of Chicago). Another painting dated 1896 also depicts the same figure ("Interior with a Figure," Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design). Charles Erskine Scott Wood, a friend and patron of Weir's, admired the painting, and when the artist offered it to him at a nominal price, he refused but found a buyer for it in E.F.
