Once called "Portrait of the Artist's Father," this painting has since been reconsidered in the light of early criticism as a figure study of an old man in the studio of Weir's father. It was first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York in 1876, eight years after its execution. The original owner of the picture was Joseph A.
