About Artwork: (1917) "Thayer moved his studio to Dublin, New Hampshire in 1892. One of his favorite subjects there was Mount Monadnock, depicted in this picture. A letter written in 1917 by Thayer's wife dates this particular version of the theme to the third week of October 1917. The existence of two nearly identical compositions (Freer Gallery of Art and Princeton Art Museum) suggests that all three were the result of Thayer's studio practice of experimenting with the same theme on several different occasions. The other versions are datable to 1918 and 1919. Thayer sold this version to the Museum through his friend, the New York businessman and art collector, John Gellatly." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
